At Purbrook Junior School, PSHE is at the heart of our curriculum and everyday school life. The important themes explored through a ‘SCARF’ curriculum are taught both implicitly and explicitly across all year groups and reflect the universal needs shared by all children and staff. The themes are as follows:

Me and My Relationships

Valuing Difference

Keeping Safe

Rights and Respect

Being My Best

Growing and Changing

The concepts within our PSHE educational programme involves revisiting the six core themes on a regular basis, ensuring that challenge is increased, scope is broadened and pupils’ thinking is deepened extensively.

PSHE prepares pupils for both their futures and their present day-to-day lives. We recognise the importance of our children having the opportunity to recognise and reflect on how learning is relevant to them and can be applied in their own lives.

At Purbrook Junior School, we want to ensure that every single child is allowed to make sense of themselves, those around them and the wider world thus allowing them to be respectful, open-minded, resilient and beneficial members of society.

“The SCARF Learning Journeys show how the topic Growing and Changing develops from Nursery to Y6 (Eng) P7 (Sco), in age and developmentally-appropriate ways.

Our Growing and Changing Unit covers the DfE statutory RSHE requirements listed within the Changing Adolescent Body topic under statutory Health Education. As schools are expected to deliver a spiral curriculum, content is introduced in the early years; for example, the difference between girls’ and boys’ bodies and the correct words for external body parts is covered before later content about how and why bodies change.

Lesson content grows in complexity and maturity, in line with children’s development, supporting them every step of the way.” SCARF

Our current PSHE leader is: Mrs E O’Hare and Mrs V Ashton
